Project Kinship

Since 2018, the Brea Education Foundation has funded Project Kinship, a restorative practices program at Brea Olinda High School, Brea Canyon High School, Brea Junior High School, Arovista Elementary School, and Laurel Elementary School.

Restorative Practices is based on the principles of Restorative Justice. The approach and philosophy complement the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Model (PBIS) in addressing issues of school climate and students’ needs. Restorative Practice in school settings is evidence-based and is used as Tier I, II, and III interventions and an alternative to suspension or expulsion. Restorative practices help youth increase social-emotional skills to address and navigate challenges and address harm to increase school safety and improve school climate.

Project Kinship services include student intervention and support, paraprofessional counseling, family support, home visits, intensive case management, mediation support, and restorative circles: arts and healing, seeking safety (substance abuse) leadership, and women empowerment.

Stack-Waggener Scholarship in Math and Science

The Brea Education Foundation administers and annually awards the Stack-Waggener Scholarship in Math and Science, established by Gerry Stack (BOHS '41) and Ruby June (Ferree) Stack (BOHS '42) in honor of Alice (Fritsch) Waggener, who had a profound effect on their lives.

The Stack-Waggener Scholarship in Math and Science provides merit-based student aid to students graduating from Brea Olinda High School pursuing degrees in Math, Physics, Computer Sciences, or Engineering at Fullerton College or a four-year university.
